Kawartha Youth Orchestra Tells Winter Tales
Peterborough, ON –The 2011/2012 season premiere concert of the Kawartha Youth Orchestra’s 10th Anniversary year launches at 3pm on Sunday, December 4th, 2011 at Market Hall Theatre. “Winter Tales” features the talents of the orchestra’s concertmistress, Claire Motyer who at the tender age of 16 will be performing two movements from Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto No. 2.
In an interview, Claire recounts how as a 3-year-old she heard her mother playing violin and wanted to try. A year later, she started taking lessons first with Loretta Lane and finally with esteemed pedagogue and KYO string coach, Witold Swoboda with whom she continues to this day, 12 years later. When asked about the unusual choice of concerto, she explains that “this is a stepping stone piece my teacher felt was good for me at this point. It’s actually played quite a bit although you don’t hear it as often as Mendelssohn or Bruch. The second movement is one of my favourites to play!”
KYO Gala was a Brilliant Feast for the Senses
Peterborough, ON – Saturday, November 5th, I found myself in the glorious new Market Hall with 175 of my nearest and dearest friends, sampling delicious foods and wines at a very special anniversary party – the KYO Feast for the Senses Gala. All were friends for an evening in support of the tenth season of concerts by the Kawartha Youth Orchestra, a jewel in Peterborough’s cultural crown.
During the past ten years, local, talented young musicians have auditioned, played for a while and moved on; to music careers, and other walks of life. Their time with the KYO taught them discipline, teamwork, commitment, leadership and gave them a lifelong love of music. The cycle carries on and students continue to flourish at the KYO ten years later a success worthy of a Gala evening.
