Dear Gr. 7-12 & Music teachers:

The Kawartha Youth Orchestra is excited to share with you a musical opportunity coming to Market Hall in the form of its annual Outreach concert series! This February event is perfect for Gr. 7 through 12 students who have started band instruments and best of all – it’s free!

February 27th Concert & Conducting Workshop

This unique event not only showcases the talented members of the Kawartha Youth Orchestra in a delightful repertoire of French classical music, but gives your music students the chance to try their hand at conducting a real, live orchestra! Participating schools will receive a pre-concert Teacher Package in preparation for the event, which includes information about conducting technique and other curriculum-related information and background about the music they will experience at the show. If you wish to participate in the Conducting workshop, please consider submitting one or two students who are interested in conducting the orchestra. Time may permit more.

What is the Outreach Program?

In addition to performing three public concerts a year, the KYO also presents one or two Outreach concerts each year for area students. The idea behind the Outreach shows is twofold: first, it exposes young people to the world of classical music through live performance by a group of their peers. Seeing musicians their own age ably handling the complexities of Haydn or Holst not only give audience members an insight into the power of classical composition, it also enables them to see the standard young players can meet with dedication and passionate leadership.

Second, the concerts serve as an inspiration for students, with the hope that the performance will motivate potential string and wind players in the audience to try their hand at music and perhaps one day take up the challenge of joining their school band or even auditioning for the KYO.

See the attached pdf file Info Sheet & Participation Form and give me a call or an email to find out more. Seating is limited to only 226 participants so please let us know by February 3rd!

Thanks kindly

Tori Owen

Market Hall and Kawartha Youth Orchestra announce Dina Gilbert as the inaugural RBC Emerging Artist for 2012, under the newly created emerging artist apprenticeship program.

The program is a collaboration between three community arts partners, Market Hall, the Kawartha Youth Orchestra and Peterborough Symphony Orchestra, to support the creation of an emerging artist apprenticeship program within their highly successful Youth Series. The program is funded by RBC Foundation as part of their Emerging Artists Project.

“RBC recognizes the role the arts play in vibrant communities and strong economies, and that enabling the next generation of artists to succeed is essential to continued vitality.” said Sheri McLeod, Vice President. From visual arts and music, to performing arts, writing and filmmaking, investing in the arts is a longstanding priority at RBC.”

Dina Gilbert will receive an intensive period of mentoring and gain invaluable insight into the role of a conductor and music director within both a professional and community orchestra.

Founded in 2002, the Kawartha Youth Orchestra (KYO) gives young musicians of the Kawartha region the opportunity to learn symphonic music and perform in an orchestral ensemble. The KYO offers young musicians an advanced level of instruction and a quality orchestral experience in Peterborough.

The Peterborough Symphony Orchestra (PSO) has been a cultural cornerstone of our community for over 40 years, and has developed a reputation as being one of the best community orchestras in Canada.

“Introducing this program of professional development for an emerging artist is a logical and organic growth direction for the Youth Series and fulfills the Market Hall’s mandate to develop, nurture and sustain the performing arts,” said Karen August, general manager at Market Hall.

A national call for applications invited qualified students of music, to apprentice under the guidance of the PSO/KYO music director, Michael Newnham, and become an assistant conductor to the Peterborough Symphony Orchestra and the Kawartha Youth Orchestra
The apprentice, Dina Gilbert will have an opportunity for a period of intensive participation refining and learning conducting technique as well as immersion in the administrative functions of an orchestra. The placement will culminate in an opportunity to be the assistant conductor for the Kawartha Youth Orchestra for their concert in February 2012, as well as for a performance in Market Hall’s Youth Series program, also in February 2012.

About Dina Gilbert:
Ms. Dina Gilbert is the founder and artistic director of the Ensemble Arkea, a Montreal-based chamber orchestra composed of promising young musicians. Holding a Baccalaureate in clarinet and a Master’s in conducting, Ms. Gilbert completed her doctorate studies under the supervision of Jean-François Rivest at the Université de Montréal with a final concert given on September 24th.
In recent years, Ms Gilbert has conducted the Orchestre de l’Université de Montréal, the Mihail Jora Philharmonia in Romania, the Estonian National Youth Orchestra and the Parnu City Orchestra in Estonia. She also has participated in several advanced master classes in Canada, the United States and Europe with distinguished conductors such as Lorraine Vaillancourt, Kenneth Kiesler, Leonid Grin, Peter Eötvös and Neeme Järvi.
Ms Gilbert has received grants from Fonds québéçois sur la recherche sur la société et la culture (FQRSC) for her doctoral studies and from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) to participate to the 10th International Conducting Competition of the Cadaques Orchestra in Spain.

About Music Director, Michael Newnham:
Michael Newnham is concluding his ninth season as music director of The Peterborough Symphony Orchestra. In June 2009, Mr. Newnham was appointed music director and principal conductor of Symphony New Brunswick.

Michael’s passion for music education and making music with young people is reflected in his work as music director of the Kawartha and Mississauga Youth Orchestras, and as a faculty member of Music at Port Milford and the National Music Camp of Canada. He has also been guest professor of conducting at the Taegu Hyosung University in South Korea. Michael’s gift as a music educator makes the PSO/KYO an ideal place to host an apprenticeship program, both for the level of professionalism in the organization and the capacity to learn that will be afforded the apprentice.

A born communicator, Michael’s informal, informative and humorous ‘Meet the Maestro’ preconcert chats have opened the world of music to a wide audience in Peterborough.
Mr. Newnham brings a rich background in conducting symphonic, pops, opera and ballet performances throughout Europe, Asia and Canada. The recipient of numerous awards, including ‘Best Operatic Conductor’ from the East Slovakian State Opera and the Order of Merit from the Republic of Poland, Mr. Newnham was recently presented the Turzanski Foundation award for his services in promoting Polish music and culture in Canada.

Peterborough, ON –The 2011/2012 season premiere concert of the Kawartha Youth Orchestra’s 10th Anniversary year launches at 3pm on Sunday, December 4th, 2011 at Market Hall Theatre. “Winter Tales” features the talents of the orchestra’s concertmistress, Claire Motyer who at the tender age of 16 will be performing two movements from Wieniawski’s Violin Concerto No. 2.

KYO Violinist, Claire Motyer PHOTO: MICHAEL TAYLOR

In an interview, Claire recounts how as a 3-year-old she heard her mother playing violin and wanted to try. A year later, she started taking lessons first with Loretta Lane and finally with esteemed pedagogue and KYO string coach, Witold Swoboda with whom she continues to this day, 12 years later. When asked about the unusual choice of concerto, she explains that “this is a stepping stone piece my teacher felt was good for me at this point. It’s actually played quite a bit although you don’t hear it as often as Mendelssohn or Bruch. The second movement is one of my favourites to play!”

Claire goes on to say that she’ll also be using this piece to audition for a mentoring event for youth with the Toronto Sinfonietta in February.

“Claire Motyer is one of the most talented young violinists that Peterborough has produced in recent years. Her performance of the beautiful and fiendishly difficult Wieniawski second concerto should not be missed.”

- Music Director, Michael Newnham

It seems that Claire has a clear path for a life in music although she says she is also considering teaching and still has a while to think about it. “I also take singing lessons, and I do sports at school like rowing and field hockey and I’m on the student council,” she confides. Talk about well rounded!

Concert patrons will also enjoy Sibelius’ Finlandia, Mozart’s Overture to Abduction from the Seraglio and excerpts from Coates’ London Suite as well as a seasonal gem or two to get us in the holiday mood

Tickets for this season opener are available from Titles bookstore (705-743-9610) and Market Hall theatre on weekday afternoons or online at www.markethall.org.

Peterborough, ON – Saturday, November 5th, I found myself in the glorious new Market Hall with 175 of my nearest and dearest friends, sampling delicious foods and wines at a very special anniversary party – the KYO Feast for the Senses Gala. All were friends for an evening in support of the tenth season of concerts by the Kawartha Youth Orchestra, a jewel in Peterborough’s cultural crown.

During the past ten years, local, talented young musicians have auditioned, played for a while and moved on; to music careers, and other walks of life. Their time with the KYO taught them discipline, teamwork, commitment, leadership and gave them a lifelong love of music. The cycle carries on and students continue to flourish at the KYO ten years later a success worthy of a Gala evening.

Decor Chair, Cheryl Roberts & Claire Hogenkamp enjoy Gala wine pairings

I was present for the preliminary discussions to create a youth orchestra for the Kawarthas, a brave new project that was Maestro Michael Newnham’s vision. He believed the KYO would be an incubator for young Kawartha musicians. Newly hired as Music Director for the PSO, he believed passionately that training young musicians was a means of strengthening community players and audiences for the future. Community resources were fairly limited for a risky new venture. The spark was lit, and the KYO is today celebrating a ten year success story. Well done Maestro Newnham, and all those visionary risk-takers, KYO Board, and volunteers: all the young musicians and their parents who keep the fire stoked and the flame burning bright.

That flame became a dazzling blaze of virtuoso musicianship on Saturday night, after the Gala meal, when a full audience joined the diners to fill Market Hall for a stellar concert by two of Canada’s finest artists Angela Park, on piano and Rachel Mercer on the $7.5 Million “Bonjour” Stradivarius Cello, dating from 1696. The music began with J.S. Bach, to Leos Janacek, through Franz Liszt, to Astor Piazzolla and concluded with the magnificent Sonata for Cello and Piano in g minor Opus 19 by Sergei Rachmaninov, bringing the audience spontaneously to its feet in wild applause.

A Facebook comment by audience member Libby Owen sums up the post-concert mood perfectly:

“Just returned from the KYO’s (Kawartha Youth Orchestra) fund raising gala featuring Rachel Mercer a renowned cellist (who played and has use of the 7.5 million dollar “Bonjour” Stradivarius cello) who played with the gifted pianist Angela Park. I feel like I have music oozing out of my pores … it was beautiful, music wrapping around and through you…who knew that a stringed instrument could hold a single note that long, like a raindrop finally dropping after sitting on a branch for an infinite time.”

Angela Park and Rachel Mercer

I can only add that the wine, food, and atmosphere in Market Hall was magical – a memorable night for a very good cause. Well done KYO organizers, volunteers and thank you sponsors:

Imagine listening to one of the world’s most valuable musical instruments, played by a world renowned performer, after having enjoyed some of the best foods the Kawartha’s has to offer.

The first Feast for the Senses Gala to support the Kawartha Youth Orchestra will take place at Market Hall Theatre on Saturday November 5. The Gala will feature a concert by internationally acclaimed cellist Rachel Mercer, accompanied by pianist Angela Park. Rachel will be performing on a rare 400 year old Stradivarius cello, valued at $7.5 million.

As part of the evening, patrons can taste indulgent pairings of some of Ontario’s best wines from Sandbanks vineyards with local gourmet foods provided by Black Honey, Chasing the Cheese and the Chocolate Castle.

All proceeds from the Feast for the Senses Gala will go to support the Kawartha Youth Orchestra, one of Canada’s outstanding youth orchestras. Tickets are $75 for the full Gala and $35 for the performance only. A charitable tax receipt will be provided for the Gala ticket.

“The Kawartha Youth Orchestra is so important to sustain music in our community. The KYO provides a unique opportunity for young musicians to play ensemble and grow with some of the best music instruction in Ontario. The orchestra has a bursary program and a substantial instrument bank to ensure that any young musician can participate. The Feast for the Senses Gala is a tasty and fun way to help keep the music alive” Erica Cherney, Honourary Gala Patron said.

The Kawartha Youth Orchestra was founded 10 years ago to give young musicians in the Peterborough area the opportunity to learn and perform music in an orchestral ensemble. Under the direction of Michael Newnham and professional music coaches, the orchestra rehearses and performs exceptional concerts at Market Hall as well as outreach concerts bringing orchestra music to area schools.

“This is a first-rate opportunity to hear one of Canada’s fabulous up-and-coming artists and support our very own wonderful group of young orchestral musicians”, says Kawartha Youth Orchestra conductor Michael Newnam.

Many of the orchestras alumni have gone on to post-secondary education in music and several now perform professionally.

THE EVENT

The Feast for the Senses Gala to support the Kawartha Youth Orchestra will be held on Saturday November 5th at Market Hall in Peterborough. Patrons can attend the Gala, which includes a wine and food pairing event followed by the concert. The price for the Gala is $75 and a charitable tax receipt will be issued. Patrons can opt to attend the concert only for $35.

The Gala, which begins at 6:30 features a pairing of 5 different Sandbanks Estates wines with delectable delights from some of the areas finest food providers.

Black Honey will be preparing Wild Mushroom Tarts with Goat Cheese Rosette, Beef Nagamaki with Asparagus and several other culinary surprises. Chasing the Cheese is providing a selection of unique cheeses as well as explaining how the pairings were developed. The Chocolate Castle in Millbrook is creating some special truffles designed to complement each wine. Non-alcoholic beverages will also be available.

Following the wine and food pairings, the doors will open for concert goers.

The concert begins at 8:00 with a performance by Rachel Mercer, a world renowned cellist, accompanied by pianist Angela Park. Rachel will be performing on a 400-year-old Stradivarius Cello valued at $7.5 million. Rachel and Angela will be performing Bach Suite No 1 in G major, several short cello and piano pieces, and a Rachmaninov Sonata.

THE CELLO

The Bonjour Stradivari cello, made by Antonio Stradivari in 1696, is named after an amateur 19th century Parisian cellist, Abel Bonjour, who owned it until his death sometime after 1885. The cello subsequently passed via Fridolin Hamma of Stuttgart to Dr. Hans Kühne of Cologne, who loaned the cello to the Stradivari Bicentennial exhibition in Cremona in 1937. It is illustrated in the catalogue of the exhibition. For some years, the cello was owned by the Habisreutinger Foundation of St. Gallen, Switzerland; more recently, it was owned by Martin Lovett of the celebrated Amadeus Quartet. The present owner, an anonymous donor, acquired it in the fall of 1999. The cello is valued at just under $7.5 million.

The cello is on loan to the Canada Council for the Arts Musical Instrument Bank. The Instrument Bank acquires through donations and loans fine stringed instruments to be loaned to gifted young Canadian musicians to help further their international solo or chamber music careers. Winners of the competition are awarded the use of their instruments for a three-year period.

Stradivari is generally considered the most significant artisan in this field. Stradivari’s instruments are regarded as amongst the finest bowed stringed instruments ever created, are extremely valuable, and still played by professionals today.

RACHEL MERCER

Winner of the 2009 Canada Council Musical Instrument Bank Competition, Canadian cellist, Rachel Mercer was awarded the use of the 1696 Bonjour Stradivarius cello, donated anonymously to the council, until August 2012. As the grand prize winner of the 2001 Vriendenkrans Competition in Amsterdam, Rachel made her European recital debut in the Concertgebouw Kleine Zaal. Rachel has performed as a soloist across Canada, in Europe, the Balkans, the United States, South Africa and Israel, including appearances with the Toronto Symphony, National Arts Centre, Durban, and Banff Festival orchestras. Her performances have been broadcast in Canada, Israel and Europe. She currently records for Israeli indie label EnT-T. Her debut disc of solo cello pieces, Room was released in April 2008.

Born in Edmonton, Rachel began cello studies at the age of three with Diana Nuttall. She spent formative years with Kristl Armstrong at the Vancouver Academy of Music, where she made her solo debut with the Vancouver Academy Chamber Orchestra at the age of 12. After moving to Ontario, Rachel attended the Royal Conservatory of Music and received the Gold Medal for her Associate Diploma, studying with Susan Gagnon and David Hetherington. She received a BM from the University of Toronto with Shauna Rolston, an MM with honours from the New England Conservatory with Laurence Lesser, and a solo diploma from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Dmitri Ferschtman. Rachel attended Orford, Banff, Holland Music Sessions, Ravinia, Prussia Cove, Scotiafest, Proquartet, the Juilliard Quartet Seminar and the Verbier Academy, for masterclasses with Boris Pergamenschikow, Frans Helmerson, Lynn Harrell, Janos Starker, Aldo Parisot, Gregor Horsch, Valentin Berlinsky, Valentin Erben, Henry Meyer and Walter Levin.

Currently based in Toronto, Rachel has given guest masterclasses at the University of Toronto and QuartetFest at Wilfred Laurier University. She is principal cellist for Via Salzburg, a chamber music series led by Mayumi Seiler, and member of piano quartet ensemble Made in Canada, winners of CBC Galaxie Rising Stars Award, and named among “80 women to watch” in the 80th anniversary edition of Chatelaine magazine in May 2008. Ensemble Made In Canada tours regularly across the country and most recently began appearing in the United States with a residency at SUNY, New Paltz, NY. Rachel and her violinist sister Akemi formed the Mercer-Oh Trio in 2007 (with Toca Loca pianist and Toronto Music Gallery curator Gregory Oh) and are playing a complete Haydn Piano Trio cycle in 9 concerts for the Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Music Society between 2009 and Haydn’s birthday: April 1, 2012. Rachel also appears in recital with pianist Angela Park as the Mercer-Park duo. Their debut disc of Barber, Shostakovich and Lau was released in July 2011.

ANGELA PARK

Pianist Angela Park has established herself as one of Canada’s leading young musicians. Equally accomplished in both solo and chamber music experience, Angela’s versatility has led to continued success in performances across Canada, as well as in parts of the United States, Europe, Japan and Mexico.

Born in London, Ontario, Angela began her musical studies at the age of three. With the guidance of James Anagnoson, she went on to become the youngest Gold Medal winner of the Western Ontario Conservatory of Music, as well as consistent recipient of numerous awards and prizes at the Ontario Provincial Festivals, Canadian National Music Festival, and the Canadian Music Competitions.

In recent years, Angela has achieved further success at the international level, winning the grand prize at the 2001 Grace Welsh Prize for Piano in Chicago, and fifth prize at the 2003 World Piano Competition in Cincinnati. In 2006 Angela was the only Canadian representative and semifinalist prizewinner at the prestigious Honens International Piano Competition in Calgary, and in 2007 she was a medallist at the Maria Canals International Competition in Barcelona.

THE KAWARTHA YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Founded in 2002, The Kawartha Youth Orchestra gives young musicians in the Kawartha Region the opportunity to learn symphonic music and perform in an orchestral ensemble. Under the direction of Music Director Michael Newnham and professional instrumental coaches, the KYO offers young musicians an advanced level of instruction and a quality orchestral experience in Peterborough while enjoying the camaraderie of other young people and enriching the region’s arts sector.

Members of the orchestra enjoy weekly rehearsals during the school year with a professional musical director and sectional coaches. These musicians network and learn the craft of orchestral music presentation, culminating in public concerts, outreach concerts at schools and outlying communities, exchange concerts with other youth orchestras, participation in Kiwanis music festival, and trips to see professional performances. Young musicians from 12 to 24 are invited to apply each year, either in Spring or Fall.

Membership with the KYO is a great way for young people to play music and share it with other like-minded music lovers. Many KYO alumni have moved on to advanced study in music performance programs in some of the finest music schools in the country. Twenty-one (21) talented youth are participating in the 2010/2011 season, which usually plays to full houses of 160-500 audience members.
